Coaching Tip 1 from PGA Pro Phil Weyman
Concentration
All the top players have different ways to help them concentrate on the course.
The one thing they all have in common is that they take one shot at a time. Although this may sound simple and straight forward, it’s not!
Over the years I have seen players ruin good scoring opportunities by dwelling on bad shots and getting too excited by good ones. I’m not suggesting that we play like faceless clones, but try and keep excessive emotions in check on the course. You can then let them out at the 19th hole instead!
We only actually concentrate and hit the ball for around 60 minutes in a round so concentrate on each shot as it comes, have a consistent pre-shot routine and try to forget the shot, whether good or bad, until you get to you next one. Having a chat between shots with you playing partners or even humming a song might help. It worked for Jack Nicklaus and he won 18 major tournaments, Tiger Woods regularly likes to chat to his caddie and he’s not too shabby a player either!
So find a way to improve your concentration that suits you and you might surprise yourself and lower your scores without spending hours hitting hundreds of balls on the practice area.
