Coaching Tip 3 from PGA Pro Phil Weyman

Equipment

EquipmentThere have been many articles written about golf equipment over the years and one question that I am regularly asked is “how do I choose the right clubs to suit me?"

Well the answer is really quite simple.

The first thing to do is to visit a qualified PGA golf professional who has a reasonable stock of golf clubs from various different manufacturers. He will be only too pleased to recommend 2 or 3 manufacturers’ golf clubs that will suit your game and then it is up to you as to which ones you like the look of.

From there it is a trip to the driving range for a fitting and to try the clubs. You may find that he will discuss taking you to a manufacturers fitting centre, which are becoming more popular with manufacturers than trawling the country carrying out demo days.  If the fitting is correctly carried out you will be checked for club head speed, to determine the correct shaft flex for you, club length to determine whether you will need standard or shorter or longer than standard clubs, grip size, and lofts and lies of the club head.

If the professional has a good reputation for selling sets of golf clubs you may find that he will carry several manufacturers fitting sets which carry various clubs of different specifications which will make your fitting much easier as you will actually hit the specification of the club that he will recommend and of course the one that you like and hit the best.

Finally, you give the go ahead and the professional placing the order for your clubs with the chosen manufacturer. You should then have your new set of custom built clubs delivered to the professionals shop within 10 to 14 days, maybe earlier.

So really it is that simple!

But do remember to find a good PGA professional and if you are not sure who to go to, contact the different manufacturers you maybe interested in and they will be only too pleased to recommend one of their designated professionals. Remember that a new set of golf clubs is an investment in your golf game, so choose you manufacturer carefully, spend the time to get fitted properly and spend a little time on the practice range to get used to them before taking to the golf course and you will have a “great set of tools” to enjoy your golf with.

Good luck with your golf and see you next month.
